About this recording

We may never fully understand how the old Irish harpers played, as the living tradition – transmitted orally – came to an end about 200 years ago. But we do have many pieces of the puzzle, and new research in this field makes possible a deeper understanding of traditional performance practice. This allows us to attempt to reconstruct this lost art. Sylvia’s main area of interest over the last couple of years has been traditional Irish harp fingering. This talk is a summary of her most recent work; it includes an overview of her approach together with exciting new insights into traditional fingering. This is a work in progress.
