Event Overview
We will be learning the well-known lament, Marbhna Luimnigh [‘Limerick's elegy’]. We will be basing our playing on Edward Bunting’s field transcription noted down from harper, Patrick Quin, under the title Lochaber. Bunting gives no indication of bass but we will use principles from his transcriptions of other tunes to play this tune, using treble and bass. I will give you my suggestions of how to use the fingering techniques from Bunting's published tables of fingerings, in order to play this tune. We will also be exploring possible fingering techniques for the ornamentation that Bunting has indicated, and we will address other questions that arise from this transcription: key/mode, rhythm, octave registers etc.
