Event Overview
In these two sessions we will be working on the harp version of Turlough Carolan’s Eleanor Plunkett which Edward Bunting collected from the playing of Denis O'Hampsey, under the title Madam Keil. There are many interesting things about this transcription, including the fact that it has the second half, which is missing from the better-known versions of Eleanor Plunkett. We will deal with the second half in the second session. I will be giving you my suggestions on how to play this version, using old Irish harp fingering techniques derived from Edward Bunting’s 1840 table of fingerings. We will build on the techniques used for playing the First Tunes, but also introduce additional fingering techniques. We will also discuss some of the issues that arise in this field transcription (rhythmic ambiguity, octave ambiguity etc.) and look for solutions on how to deal with these questions in order to 'fix it' on the harp.
