Event Overview
It has long been assumed that this was an impossible question to answer: that we had his melodies but that his ’arrangements’ were lost to us forever. But Siobhán’s recent PhD research on some of Bunting’s field transcriptions – together with a quote unearthed by Simon Chadwick – unexpectedly helped her to put pieces of the Carolan jigsaw together. In this session she will share her research outcomes with you to try to get you as close as currently possible to Carolan’s compositional style, with examples of his music (both hands!) as transcribed directly from the playing of old Irish harpers in the 1790s, only 50+ years after Carolan’s death.
